In the Upper East Region of Ghana the drinking water supply has not been up to standard for years. The Tono Drinking Water project, a partnership between the Dutch and Ghanaian governments, supported through Invest International, and executed by engineering company Denys, has changed this.
In the northeastern tip of Ghana, the Upper East Region, bordering Burkina Faso and Togo, the land is dry with consistently high temperatures. In this part of the country, approximately 12 hours from capital Accra the drinking water supply has been insufficient for years. The Tono Drinking Water project, a collaboration between Invest International, The Dutch and Ghanaian governments, and engineering company Denys, is bringing about a change.
Denys built a new water treatment plant with a water inlet at the Tono Dam, which pumps the water from the lake. The drinking water from the plant at Tono is transported via a 64 km pipeline to standpipes in Navrongo, Bolgatanga, Paga and Zuarangu and surrounding communities.
Now 400,000 residents have access to clean, safe and affordable drinking water.
400,000 residents in Upper East Ghana now have access to clean, safe and affordable drinking water, improving health and the quality of life.
Besides a new water treatment plant, 50kms water network and 100kms power line in cities have been installed, enhancing water supply and regional infrastructure.
Clean water access instead of polluted boreholes, reduces infections, improving health, fostering economic development, enhancing stability in the region.
For women and girls the project reduces water fetching distances; enabling more time for education and work.
