Birds eye view of solar panels

Project summary

Energyra’s innovative solar modules result in more robust and lighter panels, enabling solar energy production on more building roofs than is currently possible. With its Dutch partner, GX Energi will test the approach to assembling high-tech solar panels in a new environment and their efficiency under real-life market conditions.

The project entails installing 1.000 panels at the Versfeld BlueBulls Stadium in Pretoria, an installation scale comparable to other world-class sporting facilities. To support the project’s goals, we provided €650,000 via the Development Accelerator, a loan facility we manage on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Project impact

Reducing electricity’s GHG footprint

The project will likely enable utility-scale life cycle GHG emissions 21 times lower than the coal-fired system supplying 89% of South Africa's electricity.

Creating local employment opportunities

The project aims to start an automated assembly line in Johannesburg, creating 60 direct jobs and over 200 indirect logistics and support jobs.
