Project summary
In the last quarter of 2023, VAMED handed over the first two hospitals.
The Point Pedro Accident & Emergency Centre, a base hospital, offers state-of-the-art CT-scan, X-ray, and ultrasound imaging, four trauma operating theatres, dialysis, caesarean section and minor operating theatres, and adult and neonatal intensive care units (ICU).
The Vavuniya Cardiology and Nephrology Unit, a speciality hospital, features two cardiology operating theatres, dialysis, adult ICU and a state-of-the-art catheterisation laboratory with an angiography imaging theatre.
In 2024, VAMED will hand over the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Maternity and Women’s Health at the district general hospital in Kilinochchi and the Provincial Centre of Rehabilitation and Psycho-Trauma with enhanced capacity in the Accident & Emergency Unit at the base hospital in Mankulam.
The project receives grant funding of €21 million from the DRIVE programme, which we manage on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With partner governments, such as Sri Lanka, we develop essential infrastructure projects by creating synergies between public needs and private businesses.
Project impact
Improving access to healthcare
The project will increase the Northern Province's medical capacity by 68,000 patients while reducing the need for long-distance travel to access healthcare.
Increasing the well-being of medical staff
VAMED provides mental health and trauma training, which leads to fewer healthcare professionals quitting or taking sick leave.
