Project summary

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in Ghana. It is estimated that one person falls ill with TB every 12 minutes, yet the disease remains significantly underdiagnosed. Of the approximately 44,000 people who develop TB annually, only 12,674 were placed on treatment in 2020, highlighting a substantial detection gap.

Delft Imaging has played a key role in addressing this public health challenge. Over the past years the company has deployed 54 digital X-ray systems across Ghana, including mobile and portable units that extend diagnostic services to remote and underserved communities. Supported by training, maintenance, and digital connectivity, this initiative has created a scalable, nationwide diagnostic network. Already contributing to the detection of approximately 2 million TB cases.

While primarily aimed at improving TB detection, these imaging systems are used across a broad spectrum of medical conditions, significantly enhancing overall diagnostic capacity.

In addition, the project has advanced Ghana’s digital health ecosystem by improving connectivity between healthcare facilities and the Ministry of Health. This has enabled real-time data collection, remote collaboration, and more efficient health system management. Evidence shows that the programme has also improved access to care by reducing travel distances and associated costs for patients seeking X-ray services, thereby lowering financial and geographic barriers.

This impact has not gone unnoticed. Delft Imaging’s innovative approach has earned international recognition, including the prestigious FD Gazellen Oryx Prize, awarded to one of the Netherlands’ fastest-growing and most impactful companies.

Our impact

Expanding access to healthcare

The project brings diagnostic services closer to patients by reducing distance, cost and waiting times. More people can access screening locally, leading to earlier detection and improved health outcomes.

Creating jobs and local capacity

The rollout and maintenance of the systems have created jobs and built local expertise in Ghana, from technicians to healthcare workers. Training programmes ensure sustainable use and long-term impact.

Strengthening Dutch earning capacity

For Delft Imaging, international expansion strengthens revenue streams and global market position. In this way Dutch innovation contributes also to economic growth at home.

Advancing global health innovation

The project shows how AI-driven diagnostics can be deployed at scale in low-resource settings. It serves as a model for future applications worldwide, from infectious diseases to maternal health.
