Project summary
Tygerberg Central Hospital is the largest public hospital in the Western Cape and the second largest in South Africa. It serves more than 107,000 admitted patients and nearly 500,000 outpatients every year, while also functioning as a national referral and academic teaching hospital.
To address growing healthcare demands and replace the current infrastructure, Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, supported by the Infrastructure Fund and the National Treasury  is redeveloping the hospital through a major public-private partnership project.

The project will create a new 893-bed tertiary and quaternary hospital equipped with modern healthcare facilities and state-of-the-art technology. Invest International, on behalf of the Dutch government, is providing a DRIVE grant of up to €45 million for advanced medical equipment and oncology-specific health technology.

The project is expected to reach financial close in 2029, after which procurement opportunities for international suppliers, including Dutch suppliers, will become available. Commissioning of the new hospital is targeted for the 2034 financial year.
Beyond healthcare, the investment strengthens the long-standing partnership between the Netherlands and South Africa and contributes to broader sustainable development goals.
