Project summary
Innovating for a stable, sustainable energy future
Newton Energy Solutions is a Dutch scale-up on a mission to make renewable energy storage accessible to all. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TNO, Newton has spent years developing the NEStore®—an innovative thermal energy battery that stores surplus solar power in water and stainless steel for later use. It’s a sustainable alternative to traditional gas-heated boilers and far more affordable than conventional electrical batteries. With only 1% energy loss compared to 30% for boilers, the NEStore® enables households, nursing homes, hotels, and sports clubs to store clean energy for when it’s needed most—reducing CO₂ emissions and improving energy independence.
Dutch expertise is at the core of the project: Newton’s patented design was developed in the Netherlands, and the company’s assembly station and production facility are located in Delft. The tanks will be produced in Germany and assembled locally, creating jobs and strengthening the Dutch clean tech sector.
Closing the financing gap
Despite its strong market potential, Newton Energy Solutions faced a common challenge for innovative scale-ups: limited access to working capital. Through the Dutch Trade and Investment Fund (DTIF), which we manage on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Invest International provided a pre-financing loan in 2025. This will help Newton bring the NEStore® to market faster, expand its customer base, and prove the commercial viability of its technology.

Project impact
Affordable and clean energy
The NEStore® improves energy efficiency through highly effective thermal storage—losing only 1% of stored energy compared to market alternatives.
Decreased emissions
Each NEStore® can save up to 0.8 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per household per year, with the potential to reach 0.08 million tonnes annually at scale.
Dutch innovation on the global stage
By introducing a patented Dutch energy storage technology to new markets, Newton supports the Netherlands’ leadership in the energy transition.
