Project summary
Phong Phu International JSC (PPJ) produces thousands of pairs of jeans daily, including denim with a worn-out, distressed look. The latter requires multiple wash cycles and bleaching agents, using vast amounts of water and energy. PPJ is piloting the Wiser Wash technique at its Da’Nang factory to reduce its water footprint.
We provided €400,000 in development capital for the pilot project through the Development Accelerator, a facility we manage on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project involves testing the technique in the Da’Nang factory, verifying its effectiveness, and exploring how to scale it up in all PPJ facilities.
Project impact
Reducing denim's water footprint
The Wiser Wash technique reduces water consumption in the washing process by 65 per cent and has saved 56 million litres in 2021.
Improving working conditions for women
The technique shortens denim's lengthy production process, which places great demands on PPJ's factory workers, 90 per cent of whom are women.
