Project Summary

Gas flaring in Nigeria remains an environmental and public health challenge, releasing toxic emissions and wasting valuable energy. FlareOut®, developed by Energy Ventures B.V., captures and processes associated gas at oil extraction sites—gas that would otherwise be flared or vented. The recovered gas is converted into cleaner fuel for electricity generation or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking offering a sustainable alternative to wood and charcoal.

Each unit can produce up to 5,000 tonnes of LPG annually, potentially serving 25,000 households. The units are manufactured in the Netherlands, with technical collaboration from Delft University of Technology. According to the World Bank, Nigeria flared approximately 5.7 billion cubic meters of gas in 2023, ranking it as the 8th largest gas-flaring country globally. This project offers a practical step toward reducing flaring and expanding energy access.

Waste energy meets energy access

Despite their potential, early-stage cleaner energy technologies like FlareOut® often face high development costs, regulatory complexity, and limited access to local financing- barriers that can deter commercial investors.  With development capital  from Invest International, Energy Ventures is now able to take important next steps: finalising the engineering design, conducting gas composition testing, and preparing for pilot deployment. This early-stage support helps demonstrate the technology’s feasibility and market potential, laying the foundation for future scale-up and investment.

Each FlareOut® unit has the potential to avoid up to 41,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions per year, making it a powerful tool for climate mitigation. While renewable energy remains the long-term solution to global energy and climate challenges, FlareOut® offers a practical and immediate way to reduce the environmental and health impacts of the oil and gas operations—turning waste into opportunity and powering cleaner, safer communities.

Our impact

Cutting greenhouse gas emissions

By capturing and repurposing flare gas, FlareOut® units can prevent up to 41,000 tCO₂e annually, reducing emissions at thousands of oil sites

Improving community health

The elimination of toxic flare emissions helps reduce respiratory illnesses and enhances air quality for nearby communities.

Expanding access to clean energy

With the capacity to produce up to 5,000 tonnes of LPG per year, each unit supports clean cooking fuel access for approximately 25,000 households.

Boosting power supply reliability

Each unit can generate 20 MW of electricity from fuel gas, helping provide more consistent power to local homes and businesses that currently receive less than four hours of electricity a day.
